A fact you won’t hear from Donald Trump’s mouth. Nearly all of the cooperating witnesses in his 4 indictments are Republicans or people once part of his team. Information that debunks Trump’s claims of political influence as the basis for these criminal investigations.
The House Select Committee on the January 6th attack was led by two Republican representatives who honorable put Country over Party. Something that was once the norm for American elected officials. Now seems to be a rarity. However, the Trump indictments are filled with cooperating Republicans. Who, still believes in the one-time mantra of democracy.
Adam Kinszinger and Liz Cheney are two vital members of the House January 6th Committee. Have been cast aside by their once proud party. Both Representatives had strong conservative records. Yet the new MAGA wing of the party. Accuses them and others that have put the nation first as R.I.N.O’s. Which stands for Republican in name only.
The litmus test for today’s GOP is not the conservative values it once was. No today it’s all about loyalty to the current ruler of the party, Donald Trump. This is laughable because Trump’s mantra is “Trump over everyone “. It’s ironic, that such a self-serving man has such a loyal base. At this point, the Republican Party operates more like a cult than one of two parties in a democracy.
Yet among the Trump sycophants have risen the true heroes of the Republican Party. Those who were once along for the ride. Have chosen to get off once Trump’s dereliction of his constitutional duties was evident.
Even in this small group of Republicans. There are two tiers. One is those who did the honorable thing as soon as they witnessed wrongdoing by Trump. Then there’s the longer list of those who eventually made the patriotic decision after years of being complicit.
The latter list contains names like Mike Pence, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, Mitch McConnell, Chris Christie, Ronna Mcdaniel, Mick Mulvaney, Mark Esper, Anthony Scaramucci, and more. This list of people ultimately did the right thing and history will look favorably on them. None are worthy of our praise though. As it was Trump who had already thrown them aside before they chose to condemn the one-term President.
It’s the following people that are owed our gratitude for their selfless actions. These should be the leaders of the Republican Party if the MAGA disease had not infected the base. True patriots, who take their oath to the Constitution above partisan allegiance.
The two Republicans leading the comprehensive investigation into Trump’s attempted coup. Elizabeth Cheney and Adam Kinszinger, facing expulsion from the Party they once called home. Are national heroes and should be celebrated as such. They belong at the top. As True defenders of democracy and examples of a healthy GOP.
We also need to recognize the cast of female staffers who risked their futures in politics to do the right thing. The names include Stephanie Grisham, Alysa Fahar Griffin, Cassidy Hutchison, Rickie Niceta, Sarah Mathews, and Olivia Troy. Without these women, the federal case against the former president would not exist.
The following women also chose country over party and left their high-ranking positions in the government. Some were even in Trump’s cabinet. Including Secretary Elaine Chao, Secretary Betsy Devos, and Assistant Secretary Elinore McCanse-Katz, All left their positions in the wake of the January 6th insurrection. Representative Barbara Comstock, called for Trump to drop out of the 2016 Presidential Race. She was rightfully disgusted by his “Access Hollywood tape”. Sen Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are both anti-MAGA Republicans. Who, have managed to remain in office. Not an easy feat, in the current GOP.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that a large portion of this list are women. Considering Trump’s past sexual wrongdoings. It takes a mountain of courage to do what is right. Which these women have done. Even in the face of political homelessness.
That brings us to a group of Republicans that stood up to Trump. When the country needed them most. They refused to let him subvert democracy. They were the last line of defense and stood strong. They include Georgia’s; Governor Brian Kemp, his Lt Gov Geoff Duncan, Secretary Brad Raffensperger, and Gabriel Sterling. All held up, under intense pressure to preserve the will of the Georgia electorate. A stand that protected our democracy from becoming a banana republic.
Finally, we have a few never-Trumpers. This group was brave enough to never side with the autocratic wannabe. Most notable in this class are Sen. Mitt Romney and Governors Charlie Baker, and Larry Hogan. These men have always been vocal in their contempt for Trump.
These are Republicans who are all still in the political landscape. They will not only go down in history as heroes, of the once proud GOP. They have all done what’s right for this country. In the face of much scrutiny from their base. That’s why present-day Democrats and anti-MAGA conservatives alike, should applaud this group of Republicans.
In a two-party system, you still need the opposing party to value American Democracy. Otherwise, this great Republic will not survive. It’s a critical moment in time. If true Conservatives don’t stand behind this cast of truth-seekers. They won’t have the option to choose country over party. So on behalf of Democratic voters everywhere I applaud your commitment to the constitution of the United States of America. We may not agree on policy. However, we applaud your commitment to our country.
