This summer the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against Alabama for gerrymandering their Congressional maps. The highest court in the land upheld the previous decision of a three-judge panel that ordered the state to redraw its congressional maps to include a second Black-majority district. The decision by the Supreme Court came as a surprise because the right-leaning court had made previous rulings that have eroded portions of the Voting Rights Act.
Alabama Republicans were ordered to change the illegally drawn congressional map. Yet they ignored the court’s ruling and failed to draw a second Black-majority district. Once again the White-majority districts made up six of Alabama’s seven districts. While Black citizens make up 27% of Alabama’s total population.
A three-judge panel unanimously rejected the latest attempt by Alabama. Saying it was “disturbing” how the state had completely disregarded The Supreme Court’s ruling. The panel made up of two Trump appointed Judges said “We are deeply troubled that the State enacted a map that the State readily admits does not provide the remedy we said federal law requires,”
If it wasn’t such a blatant form of racism, you might appreciate Alabama’s dedication to gerrymandering. Republican-led states nationwide continually refuse to draw their congressional maps to account proportionally for their minority population. Instead, they concoct maps that look more like Rorschach tests than congressional districts. They dilute minority neighborhoods by breaking them up and coupling them into larger Republican-heavy White areas. Creating districts that structurally make no sense. All to disenfranchise the portion of the electorate that disagrees with their politics. Just another dirty trick Republicans rely on, to keep hold of their loosening grip on power. They realize that their policies are in opposition to the majority opinion. So cheating or moving the goalposts is how they maintain rule over the slice of the population they still govern.
It appears Alabama felt so comfortable ignoring the Supreme Court, they must think given a second chance at the top court the slim majority would flip in their favor. If I were on the team at ProPublica. Who, has done an amazing job uncovering corruption by Supreme Court Justices. I would keep a close eye on any upcoming vacations, by the Conservatives on the court, to the Redneck Riviera. Because beaches covered with all-white sand sound like the perfect destination for the morally corrupt.
