The Biden Administration is looking to protect millions of civil service government workers, from future Republican efforts to replace the non-political workers with loyalists. The move is vital to strengthen our democracy from the current Republican Presidential Candidates who have vowed to fire those workers if elected to office.
In his final days in office, Donald Trump signed an executive order that would make it easier to fire civil servants. Those who were deemed anti-Trump would be forced out and replaced by loyalists. Civil Servants are non-political government positions. By politicizing these positions you create the foundations of an autocratic government. Something Trump has been very upfront about during his campaign for the presidency in 2024. According to CNN “Trump’s executive order created a new classification of federal employees titled “Schedule F” for employees serving in “confidential, policy-determining, policy-making, or policy-advocating positions” that typically do not change during a presidential transition.”
One of the Biden Administration’s first executive orders was to repeal Trump’s effort to wipe the government of non-political personnel. However, Trump along with other Republican candidates for the 2024 presidential election have vowed to move ahead with similar efforts if elected. So President Biden must strengthen the policies regarding these governmental positions. The rule Biden has suggested grants civil service workers protections that allow them to keep their posts unless they voluntarily give them up. It would also protect employees from involuntarily being transferred to a job where they could be replaced.
Trump is not the only Republican who has vocalized their intentions to gut the current federal workforce to implement their vision. CNN reports “In the Republican presidential primary, a number of candidates have followed Trump’s lead in vowing to reduce the federal workforce. Vivek Ramaswamy said this week he would fire 1 million federal workers. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis listed several agencies he would eliminate if elected.”
A New York Times article earlier this year described the other autocratic ideas that Trump plans to install if elected to a second term. Trump, with help from conservative groups, not only vows to implement these autocratic ideas if he is elected. They are calling on other Republican candidates to follow through if they win the Republican nomination for President.
“Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.”
“He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.”
He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.””
It is disturbing how anyone listening to Trump’s own plans for a second term as president can be met with anything less than terror. He has laid out for the American Public a blueprint that Dictators throughout history have used to topple democracies around the globe. Yet here we are with polls showing President Biden and Donald Trump essentially tied. Is it that the public is so misinformed? Or are half of Americans willing to give up on democracy? Either way, it is a frightening reality that this country needs to address. It’s not only Democrats who need to continually speak out against this erosion of our democratic institutions. Independents and the few remaining Republicans who care about the destructive course Trump and his allies have steered our democracy toward. Must be vigilant in informing the electorate of the consequences Trump and like-minded Republicans would have on our country if elected in 2024. Anything less, history will hold those cowards who stood by and let Trump destroy our democracy as complicit as he and his perverse followers.
