Has The Writers Strike Allowed Trump To Spread His Divisive Rhetoric Without Retribution?

On May 2nd of this year, The Writers Guild of America began their strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The union which represents 11,500 writers from across television and movies has forced the industry to come to a screeching halt.

In most cases, the country can still function properly without new television and movies being produced. However, there is one genre that this country is in desperate need of now more than ever. The late-night political shows. The ones that shed a much-needed spotlight on current political issues. Those programs hold political figures accountable by highlighting their hypocrisy and false rhetoric. Those political figures now garner most of the attention from the 24-hour cable news networks, most notably Donald Trump.

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”

Trump and his Republican enablers get continual free publicity from News outlets on both sides of the political spectrum. With faux news outlets such as Fox News, OAN, and NewsMax being run by Conservative groups. They limit their coverage to right-wing views and propaganda only. With no regard for the dissenting opinion from the political Left.

Even the more respected outlets like CNN give context on both sides of an issue. But when one side is spreading misinformation and false narratives, they too are complicit by presenting the public with unfounded GOP talking points. A majority of their programming revolves around Donald Trump and the Republican officials who are accessories to his campaign against democracy.

“The Problem With John Stewart”

That is why it has been incumbent upon the late-night political television scene to hold these Republican con men and women accountable for their misdeeds and hypocrisy. It is the only opposing force that levies truth and justice towards the out-of-control MAGA Party through wit and comedy. Without these brilliant minds handing out verbal comeuppance to those Republicans trafficking in hateful rhetoric on a nightly basis. The country has no recourse but to consume the media that profits off of fear-based journalism. Creating a tremendous void for those of us who enjoy the art form for its comedy as much as the significant balance it lends to the political landscape.

Political Shows including “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, “The Daily Show”, “Real Time with Bill Maher”, and “The Problem With John Stewart” are just an example of some of the high-quality programming that has been halted due to the writers’ strike. As have the Late Night Shows featuring Jimmy Kimmel, Steven Colbert, and Seth Myers just to name a few, are all on strike-induced hiatus. While most of these important political commentators have taken to podcasting in the interim. A vast majority of the country will never be exposed to those niche forums.

“Real Time With Bill Maher“

Let me be clear in my support for the Writers Guild of America and all of its members. The battle to save the industry from A.I. and corporate greed is vital for those who work tirelessly to provide the creative content that we all consume. However, the impact that this necessary action may have on the nation’s political system is frightening. The country needs these honest comedic opinions to counterbalance the dangerous political forces that Trump and his MAGA morons have unleashed on the world. Without these underappreciated political vigilantes handing out nightly justice to the liars and traitors of the Republican establishment. The United States of America and it’s electorate are forced fed bull 💩 because our late-night heroes have been sidelined by corporate gluttony and malfeasance. A topic that Republicans would love nothing more than to share their fabricated account, with the content-craving American audience.

“The Daily Show“

The time has come for the television and movie executives holding the industry hostage, so they can make record profits off of hardworking writers and actors alike. To come back to the negotiating process to ensure a successful future for all those involved in the industry. Because the longer the country is deprived of comedic political discourse, the damage our fragile democracy can withstand will reach a tipping point. If and when that happens those late-night political conversations we all enjoy. Could easily become banned under the rule of a Trump authoritarian regime.
