According to CNN) — “New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez was charged with corruption-related offenses for the second time in 10 years, prosecutors will announce Friday morning.
Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, were indicted on bribery offenses “in connection with their corrupt relationship with three New Jersey businessmen,” the US attorney in New York tweeted.
This is the second set of corruption charges levied against Menendez by the Justice Department in a decade. He previously fought off conspiracy, bribery, and honest services fraud related to alleged personal favors.”
This is the major difference between the Republicans and Democrats. As Democrats, we want to rid the party of anyone who has broken the laws they swore to uphold. When there is a bad actor in the party we don’t make excuses for their criminal or morally corrupt behavior. We wait for the necessary investigation to play out and if the conclusion is that foul play was committed by one of our own we rid the party of them.
Take New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for example. In the early stages of the pandemic, he was the darling of the Democratic Party. Calls for Cuomo to be the next Democrat up after President Joe Biden had finished his tenure as president were rampant. Then accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced and in a short time, once the facts became overwhelming the Governor was forced to resign. The lead prosecutor investigating Cuomo was Letitia James the same Attorney General that Donald Trump has accused of being politically motivated. Both Democratic Senators from New York along with the Biden Administration never claimed that the investigation was politically motivated. On the contrary, they called for an investigation into the allegations against the Democratic Governor. The one-time face of the Democratic Party was quickly removed from its roster, as you would expect from a governing body. If Governor Cuomo was a Republican not only would the Party have discounted the allegations, he most likely would be running for the Republican nomination for the Presidency.
That’s what sets Democrats and Republicans apart in this era. Democrats can claim the moral high ground not because every single member is an upstanding individual. Far from it, but we don’t accept wrongdoing by our own. When the facts and evidence are proven against them. Republicans not only make excuses to cover up their bad apples, but they also use the levers of governmental power to make sure their corrupted member stays in office.
The examples are numerous but let’s name a few. Of course, the worst case is Donald Trump. The lengths Republicans have gone to cover up his long list of criminal charges is staggering. George Santos the Republican conman who lied his way into office also faces criminal prosecution for his actions. Santos one of the most unlikeable people in the history of politics is still being protected by the Republican Party and its base. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently faced impeachment for his criminally corrupt conduct but was bailed out by Republican State Lawmakers despite the overwhelming evidence against him.
So Senator Menendez is innocent until proven guilty of the charges he is facing. However, the evidence against him seems very credible. That is why you are already hearing his colleagues within the Party calling for Menendez to resign in light of the facts that have been revealed. With no Democrats in leadership positions attacking the investigating body for fabricating political corruption.
It’s as if the two Parties and their followers have taken on the temperament of their respective leaders. The Democrats are well thought out and accountable like the stoic President Joe Biden. While the Republicans are delusional and morally bankrupt as the racist criminal Donald Trump. So when you hear Republicans stomp their feet and point at accusers for being politically motivated it is because they are taking the lead from their ruler Trump. The political equivalent of “I know you are but what am I”. A phrase once uttered by children on the playground, has become the rallying cry of the Right Wing.
