According to CNN — “The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an emergency bid from Alabama, setting the stage for a new congressional map likely to include a second Black majority district to account for the state’s 27% Black population.
The one-line order reflects that the feelings on the court haven’t changed since June when a 5-4 Supreme Court affirmed a lower court that had ordered the state to redraw its seven-seat congressional map to include a second majority-Black district or “something quite close to it.” There were no known dissents.”

It seems like it might be time for Alabama to get some professional help. It’s clear to anyone who is paying attention that they are struggling with dependency issues. They just can’t quit gerrymandering and it has become a serious problem. For the second time since June, they have gone running to the Supreme Court. Begging for an emergency injunction to draw up just one more congressional map that would disenfranchise black voters. They just couldn’t take no for an answer the first time around back in June.
Alabama convinced themselves they just caught the highest court in the land on a bad day. So they thought if they cleaned up the districting lines a bit and promised that they would never do it again. The SCOTUS would let them have one last fixed map.
Thankfully the Court was unified this time and refused to enable Alabama to gerrymander ever again under their jurisdiction. Recovery will not be easy for a State that was founded by a long line of gerrymanderers. Hopefully, this is Alabama’s rock bottom. The embarrassment they have brought to the South should be enough for them to change their ways. Because the damage they have inflicted on minority communities throughout the state must stop now. Otherwise, those citizens who have been disenfranchised are likely to move to a State where they will be treated as they deserve, as equals.
