Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has the country on the verge of a government shutdown. McCarthy, who refuses to negotiate with House Democrats has also refused to bring the bipartisan package that the Senate has approved up for a vote. Because of House Republicans’ inability to agree on anything with bipartisan support. This Congress has only passed 14 bills an all-time low during the same period.
McCarthy has a simple choice to make, negotiate with Democrats to avoid creating an unnecessary crisis for the American public or continue to only rely on Republicans who refuse to negotiate at all. Which will ultimately result in a shutdown. Republicans are so divided at this stage that their infighting has only intensified.
According to AP reports “Gaetz, who has taunted McCarthy for weeks with threats to oust him from his post, confronted the speaker about conservative online influencers being paid to post negative things about him. McCarthy shot back that he wouldn’t waste his time on something like that, Gaetz told reporters as he exited the meeting.”

McCarthy fears that his own Party will vote him out of the Speakership. His actions show that he cares more about his political power than he does about the health of the American population.
“I think that the speaker is making a choice between his speakership and American interests,” President Joe Biden said of McCarthy’s indecision.
“By focusing on the views of the radical few instead of the many, Speaker McCarthy has made a shutdown far more likely,” Senator Chuck Schumer Senate Majority Leader said of McCarthy’s decision to reject democratic support.

Speaker McCarthy sees working across the aisle as a defeat instead of a sound compromise. “Will I accept and surrender to what the Senate decides? The answer is no, we’re our own body.” McCarthy pouted.
“Members say they only want to vote for individual bills, but they hold me up all summer and won’t let me bring individual bills up. Then they say they won’t vote for a stopgap measure that keeps government open,” McCarthy told reporters.“So I don’t know, where do you go in that scenario?”
McCarthy’s own words clarify that he is the problem. He would rather run the country into the ground with Republicans than resolve the issue with Democrats. Even Senate Republicans understand that McCarthy’s plan is counterproductive.

“Instead of producing any meaningful policy outcomes, it would actually take the important progress being made on a number of key issues and drag it backward,” Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.
At this point, Kevin McCarthy should lose his job as Speaker if he won’t govern bipartisan for the good of the country. When he can’t even convince his fellow Republicans to get on board. Allowing the extremist Right Wing to bring down the American economy and destroy the lives of those millions who rely upon the government to function is a dereliction of duty. Until We the People vote Republicans, who refuse to do the job they are elected to do, out of office. Holding the government hostage will become commonplace. With Republicans it’s never been about governing for all the people it’s always been about their self-serving interests.
“Anytime you have a stopgap situation like this, you have an opportunity to leverage,” said Republican Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana.
