Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been saved by House Democrats to avoid a government shutdown, that would have taken place at midnight. Democrats made up a majority of the 2/3rds vote that it required to expedite the process.
Speaker McCarthy single-handedly created this crisis by backing out of the funding deal that was a bipartisan negotiation earlier this year. That deal was made as Republicans held paying the debt ceiling limit hostage unless they could influence the budget. After that Republican manufactured crisis was averted McCarthy got buyer’s remorse and backed out of the agreement.
That is how we got to this point, where once again Republicans refused to reach a bipartisan compromise so they could gut vital provisions in the earlier agreed budget. If the GOP just would have let Democrats in on the negotiations this could have been taken care of months ago. But Speaker McCarthy’s dereliction of leadership once again brought us to the brink of a government shutdown. His fear of the MAGA extremists whom he empowered with concessions. All to get the necessary votes he needed to win the Speaker position.
The dozen or so far right-wingers threatened to remove McCarthy from his dream job if he negotiated with Democrats. So this whole fiasco simply came down to Kevin McCarthy deciding to do the right thing for the entire country, but it could result in his removal. For a true leader, that decision would have been made long ago. Doing what is right is not always easy but that’s what separates a coward from being brave.
For McCarthy to blame President Biden and the Democrats yesterday when this whole mess was Republican-created. Shows how pathetic Speaker McCarthy truly is. He appeases Donald Trump and the House Republicans who McCarthy claims, “want to burn the whole place down”. While refusing to give the Speaker the necessary votes to pass Republican-only packages. To put these anti-democratic politicians’ needs in front of the health and prosperity of the American government and its population is as self-serving as it gets for Kevin McCarthy.
Even with this deal being negotiated, democracy still took a massive hit because Republicans demanded that funding for Ukraine be excluded. Which means that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin owes Republicans for a huge victory. Ukraine is on the front lines of the war to save democracy and for the right wing to cut them off is another example of their failure to act in the interests of national security.
Hopefully, this will be a lesson to everyone in this country that when casting their votes for political office there is only one party that has the best intentions for the nation as a whole. Democrats are the only ones in government that are willing to do the job they were elected to do. Democrats time and time again put country over party. If not for them the United States of America would not be able to function properly. It makes you wonder when Speaker McCarthy will thank the Democrats for coming to his rescue. Or at least apologize for putting the entire country through this mess he created.
Sadly neither will happen because Republicans are allowing their party to be directed by Trump and the MAGA extreme who “want to burn the whole place down”. If that is the extent of the Republicans’ will to govern then it is time for the electorate to replace them with Democrats who will put out the fires, not start them.
