When Steve Scalise was voted by House Republicans to be the nominee for Speaker of the House. Scalise wanted to immediately take the nomination to the House Floor for a vote. However, the MAGA crowd headed up by his opponent Jim Jordan refused. Saying they would only go to the floor until Scalise had received 217 Republican votes in the conference.
The reason being Jordan knew that his MAGA House followers would never relinquish their votes to Scalise which would ultimately lead to Scalise bowing out of the race altogether. They knew that the small minority could force their will under the cover of an anonymous conference vote. Instead of publicly facing backlash from Republican constituents through a series of votes on the floor. In what would’ve become an embarrassment for those MAGA holdouts who already have come under scrutiny by the Republican base.
Now that their devious plan worked and Scalise was pressured to step down. Jim Jordan and the MAGA wing plan to change the rules that they insisted on, so the moderates that refuse to bend to their manipulation will now suffer the consequences that they avoided. Jordan plans to take his nomination to the House Floor in a classic bait-and-switch maneuver that shows how the rules don’t apply to him and the MAGA zealots.
This tactic should’ve been seen coming by Scalise and the majority of the House Republicans. When Jordan, with the support of Kevin McCarthy, originally wanted to change the rules before the first nominating vote between Scalise and Jordan took place. Jordan knew that he had the MAGA crew in his pocket. He demanded that a full 217 vote, not a simple majority would win the nomination. When the House Republican rules clearly state a majority vote will get you the nomination. Jordan was well aware he would lose that head-to-head vote to Scalise even with the backing from Donald Trump.
This isn’t the first time that Jim Jordan has been involved in a scheme to undermine the rules of government to ensure he and his allies gain power through deception. Liz Cheney has recently warned Republicans that Jordan was a willing participant in Trump’s illegal election fraud plot to steal back the White House and his involvement in the January 6th attacks.
Jim Jordan may think that he is fooling the Republican base by undermining the House rules so he can attempt to win the Speakership. A position that is 2nd in line to the Presidency. However, Democrats realize what things Jordan is capable of, and doing his job is not one of them. Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said of Jordan “House Republicans have just elected a speaker nominee who in 16 years in Congress hasn’t passed a single bill, because his focus has not been on the American people, his focus has been on peddling lies and conspiracy theories and division,”
Sadly it’s up to the remaining House Republicans who still believe in their oath to protect and defend the Constitution and not Donald Trump. To keep Jim Jordan and his MAGA buddies from taking control of the House by way of deception. To this point, they have failed miserably by caving into their demands at every turn. The time has come for Republicans to take back the Party. From those MAGA morons who’ve created all of this chaos that has forced the government into a prolonged standstill. To give the extremists exactly what they have wanted all along will not only lead to the destruction of the Republican Party but most likely cause irreparable harm to our dwindling democracy. Republicans must refuse to hand the keys to our country over to the MAGA cult that wants nothing more than to drive democracy off a deserted embankment. Donald Trump and Jim Jordan hand in hand like the White Nationalists version of Thelma and Louise.
