(CNN)-“A federal judge on Thursday ordered Georgia to draw new congressional and state legislative maps, ruling that state legislators improperly diluted the political power of Black voters in establishing those boundaries following the 2020 census.
The ruling by US District Judge Steve Jones could result in Democrats securing an additional seat in the US House from Georgia. Republicans currently hold nine slots in the state’s 14-member congressional delegation.
The Georgia decision comes one day after the Republican-controlled legislature in North Carolina approved a congressional map that could help the GOP flip at least three US House seats now held by Democrats.”
Good news coming out of Georgia today as a Federal Judge told State Lawmakers to go back to the drawing board and give Black Voters, who have accounted for the largest percentage of population growth in the past decade, another congressional district.
This positive ruling comes a day after North Carolina released its latest congressional maps and gerrymandering is an understatement for what they produced. North Carolina is traditionally a 50/50 state where half of their 14 districts have been Democratic and the other half were Republican. Now have a 10-4 split in favor of Republicans. You would expect the GOP would have some sort of excuse for their blatant disregard for their minority constituents. However, they openly admitted that the reason they did it was to create a Republican majority.
“There’s no doubt that the congressional map that’s before you today has a lean towards Republicans,” Republican state Rep. Destin Hall, who chairs the state House Rules Committee, said on the floor on Wednesday, while arguing that it doesn’t “foreordain” future elections.
The reason why they are so confident that they may get away with illegally disenfranchising voters is because they recently flipped the State Supreme Court to Conservatives. The previous Liberal-leaning State Supreme Court ruled in the past that similar Republican attempts to redraw districts in favor of the GOP were unconstitutional. But now that they have control over the State’s Highest Court they’ll take their chances that they will get away with it because Election Day will be here soon enough.
There is no shame in today’s Republican Party. They will lie cheat and steal because they realize with Republicans in certain positions of oversight that they can get away with cheating the system. If it wasn’t so frustrating and racist that Republicans feel they have to cheat to stay in power it would be laughable. It just proves how far Republicans have fallen behind Democrats on an even playing field. With divisive social causes being their only way to attract their morally questionable base. Because when it comes to actual legislative policies the Republicans have none. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that the Supreme Court will continue to rule against Republican gerrymandering as they have in multiple recent decisions. Otherwise, the GOP will continue to lie cheat, and steal their way into government offices throughout America. If left unchecked we just might have to kiss our democracy goodbye and say hello to our new banana republic.
