(CNN)— “Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday evening that he is not sure if Florida’s red flag law is effective in removing guns from dangerous people and he wouldn’t sign one – or any gun safety measure – if elected president.
Instead, in response to Wednesday’s mass shooting at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine, that has left at least 18 dead, the Republican presidential candidate said he would institutionalize more people with mental health issues against their will.
“I think what’s ultimately effective is holding people accountable, either through mental adjudication if they’re crazy or convicting them when they’re committing crimes,” DeSantis told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source.” “In this case, I’m not sure,” he said. “I think an involuntary commitment, though, would have kept him off the street, and I think that would have done the trick.””
Let me start by saying REALLY?…SERIOUSLY?… Republicans have lost their damn minds! I realize that the GOP’s talking point regarding gun violence is to blame it on mental illness. If that was remotely true the United States would have a mental illness percentage that would be significantly higher than the rest of the world. This isn’t the case, mental illness rates are pretty comparable no matter what country you live in. Unless of course being a Republican is considered a mental illness then maybe the rates would add up. However, for now, being a Republican just means you’re an a**hole not mentally ill.
For Meatball Ron Desantis, who claims to be a hardcore Republican. Who doesn’t want to infringe on people’s rights, would rather have a person committed to a mental institution against their will than take away their firearms. How is that even remotely close to respecting a person’s rights? You’re going to take the person but leave the guns. To me, that sounds like the guns have more rights than the humans that own them do. Meatball Ron is not even going to give someone a choice between giving up their guns to avoid being committed. Nope, he’s taking citizens against their will full stop!
The Republican Party is rampant with hypocrisy in their proposed agendas. They are obsessed with people’s freedoms unless, of course, those people have differing opinions or beliefs. Then they will strip those rights and freedoms away because they know what is best for you. Don’t get me wrong, mental illness should be treated and taken seriously, but this effort by Conservatives to blame this country’s overwhelming gun violence problem on mental illness is moronic.
While I do believe in the 2nd Amendment and the rights it affords us there is a limit to what it should protect. If everyone’s rights are protected then what happens when your rights infringe on someone else’s rights? If a shooter has the right to own a mass killing weapon what happens to the rights of the innocent victims gunned down by said shooter? Does their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness no longer matter? If Republicans are hell-bent on allowing people to own weapons of mass destruction then why can’t we buy a rocket launcher? How else do you expect people to hunt without one? That my friends is their argument and as you can see it’s ridiculous.
Until Republicans can realize they are choosing the right of the gun over the people. In the case of abortion, they choose the right of embryos over the woman who created it. They even choose to treat corporations better than their constituents with deregulations that end up endangering the lives of the population. The GOP has always been the party of protecting rights and freedoms as long you share their religious beliefs or you are the highest bidder. If you don’t fall into those categories you better watch out because Meatball Ron and his fellow Republicans will make a decision for you and if that doesn’t work they will just have you committed.
