(CNN) — “The Republican-led House Ethics Committee has reached out to at least one witness as part of its investigation into GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz to schedule an interview in the coming weeks, the latest sign that the once dormant probe remains open.
The Ethics Committee, which at the time was controlled by Democrats, originally opened its Gaetz investigation in 2021, publicly announcing that its was examining a range of allegations including that Gaetz violated sex trafficking laws, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, used illicit drugs, converted campaign funds to personal use and accepted a bribe, among other claims.
Gaetz, who led the charge to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, has privately blamed McCarthy for the Ethics committee restarting its probe under McCarthy’s watch.”
There is no better spectator sport than watching Republicans tear each other down. Especially when the two parties involved are so deserving of whatever karmic retribution comes their way after years of being nothing more than narcissistic sleazoids. Matt Gaetz the “Jared from Subway” of the House Republicans. Along with his latest adversary, fellow Republican and political “one-upper” Kevin McCarthy.
Since Gaetz single-handedly ripped the gavel out of the ousted Speaker McCarthy’s hand, the two have become increasingly hostile toward each other. To the delight of political voyeurs that lean left of “Fox News”. With McCarthy’s schedule suddenly having a lot more “me time” after losing his dream gig. It appears he’s looking to fill the void by checking off items on his “bucket list” before he resigns at the end of the year. At the top spot, making sure that Matt Gaetz suffers for what he did to McCarthy.
It’s no coincidence that the Republican-led Ethics Committee was at a standstill regarding the Gaetz investigation since the GOP took over the House majority. Now suddenly, it has been very active looking into the misdeeds of one of its own members. The same colleague who happened to throw the Party into turmoil, by lighting the wick, that blew up McCarthy’s Speakership.
As much as McCarthy deserved to be dethroned, for his self-serving reign that oversaw his Party eroding the foundations of American democracy. So too does Gaetz, warrant whatever punishment fitting, if the allegations of being a sexual predator are adjudicated. The fact that these two men are popular figures in Right Wing circles suggests all you need to know about today’s moral compass of Republican voters. While Democrats are busy trying to govern for all Americans equally. The GOP is consumed with political retaliation, whether it’s going after President Joe Biden with an evidence-less impeachment inquiry. Or just to settle personal vendettas within the Party’s ranks. In the long run, the voting electorate will remember how the GOP spent their time as the majority. Besides the American taxpayers, the real losers will be the Republican Party. However, I’m sure that no longer matters to Kevin McCarthy, as long as he can check off his political bucket list, he’ll consider his tenure a success.
