(CNN) — “Foreign government efforts to target the 2022 US midterm elections appeared to grow compared with the 2018 elections, according to a declassified intelligence assessment released Monday, with a “diverse and growing group of foreign actors” participating.
There was no known order from any foreign leader to “undertake a comprehensive, whole-of-government influence campaign” like the one Russia carried out in 2016, according to the report. But the assessment found that China, Russia, Iran and Cuba all tried to meddle in congressional elections in 2022.
The intelligence community found that the Kremlin “conducted extensive research and analysis of US audiences,” identifying key demographics, narratives and platforms that it believed would be effective in amplifying Russia’s message. Among those targeted audiences were “US constituencies that they believed were more sympathetic to Russia’s emphasis on ‘traditional values,’” according to the assessment, which describes the findings as some of the “most explicit reporting to date on Russia’s US-focused influence operations.”
Russia, meanwhile, sought “to denigrate the Democratic Party before the midterm elections and undermine confidence in the election, most likely to undermine US support for Ukraine,” the intelligence community assessed, also with high confidence.”
So it appears that Russia has found an increasingly effective solution to its multi-generational United States problem. For years the Soviet Union had to rely heavily upon securing and grooming spies to try and get intelligence that could be used to undermine America and bolster the U.S.S.R. After decades of the two superpowers vying for global supremacy it became apparent that the U.S. was far superior. Which ultimately led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Once Vladimir Putin rose to power after years as a K.G.B. official and head of the F.S.B.(Federal Security Services) under former President Boris Yeltsin. His goal all along was to bring Russia back to superpower status and restore the collapsed Soviet Empire. At some point, Putin realized going head-to-head with the United States would not end well for Russia as America was far superior militarily. It wasn’t until he used lessons from Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” specifically “If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them.” In layman’s terms divide and conquer.
Putin got immediate results using this technique as he employed his FSB hackers to create increasing division between the two political parties and their supporters in the U.S.. They used fake profiles to act as political activists. Who in turn, gained huge followings that they exploited to spread disinformation and propaganda. It was so effective that it helped elect Donald Trump as President. The man who Putin just so happened to have leverage over. What he had tried and failed to do in Ukraine the previous ten years took only one election cycle to complete in the mighty United States.
Now it’s just a matter of continuing to further divide the two parties which the American public has played right into Putin’s hands. So much so that now we see China, Iran, Cuba, and even North Korea stealing from Putin’s playbook. If it feels like with every election, the country has splintered that much more. This means the plan is working perfectly for the U.S.’s adversaries.
Sadly, Right-Wingers are either too ignorant to comprehend that they are being manipulated by disinformation. Or they actively believe that democracy should be dismantled, thus making them complicit in the demise of the United States. Either way, they are simply pawns of these foreign governments and their coordinated attacks on our sovereignty. So it is incumbent upon those of us who aren’t “sleepwalking into a dictatorship”. To inform those independents and moderate GOPers (if they still exist) that a vote for Republicans is now a vote for Russia!… and China… and Iran…and the rest of the countries looking to destroy our American Values and freedoms. If you aren’t part of the solution, then you are part of the problem
