(CNN) — “Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas signed into law Monday a bill that makes entering Texas illegally a state crime, an extraordinary step in the hard-fought legal battle between the state and the federal government over efforts to curtail illegal immigration.
The measure, SB 4, grants local law enforcement the power to arrest migrants and judges the ability to issue orders to remove them to Mexico. It has sent ripples of fear throughout the Latino community in Texas, which makes up 40% of the state’s population, and was condemned by civil rights organizations and immigration advocacy groups after the Texas legislature passed it last month
Democratic House members have said the bill oversteps the federal government’s powers and echoes Arizona’s immigration status provision in what opponents have dubbed the “show me your papers” law. The law was mostly rejected by the US Supreme Court in 2012 when it upheld that the federal government sets immigration policy and laws.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is the Lone Star state’s version of Dr. Evil. With this version’s sworn enemy being immigrants and the Constitution, not Austin Powers. Today he signed into law his latest attempt to impose his own personal agenda in clear violation of Federal Immigration Laws.
This isn’t his first time implementing what he considers “Texas Justice” veiled as border security when the actual results of his past policies are considered entrapment efforts. After creating a passageway for immigrants to cross at certain border points, his Texas Rangers would arrest the asylum-seeking men for trespassing. Then he would separate them from their families, a practice that was widely condemned when the Trump Administration was using the same tactics.
Now this new law uses the fundamental concept of that process and streamlines it so that no matter where these migrants cross into Texas from Mexico they will be charged with a crime. Which means their asylum status would be revoked if convicted. Plus State, not Federal Judges are granted the power to deport these individuals circumventing the Constitution.
If you want to know what a second term of Trump would be like, look no further than Texas and how Abbott rules as if he were a dictator. With a corrupt Attorney General in Ken Paxton more than willing to enforce any and all of the Governor’s authoritarian policies. Just last week Paxton went out of his way to persecute a woman, suffering from medical complications to her pregnancy for simply following her Doctor’s orders. Even though a Judge granted the woman the legal authority to terminate her pregnancy. Paxton used her nightmarish situation to publicly punish a woman in need of medical attention. These are the lengths Texas Governor Abbott and his cronies are willing to go just to impose their political and religious beliefs upon the citizens of Texas. Combined with the victims of this new state law that would have repercussions for asylum seekers from across the globe. Unless you’re a wealthy white fascist why would you support these anti-democratic Republicans whether it’s Paxton, Abbott, or Trump?
