Colorado Supreme Court Is Facing Threats And Untrue Accusations From Right-Wingers
CNN — “After the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump is ineligible for office because of the Constitution’s “insurrectionist ban,” some prominent Republicans bashed the “unelected judges” for their decision.
“We need elections that we can trust, that we can believe in,” GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said Tuesday at a campaign event in Mason City, Iowa. “That means yes, unelected judges are not going to decide willy-nilly across the state who ends up on a ballot and who doesn’t.”
GOP Rep. Mike Waltz of Florida alsocriticizedthe “unelected judges” for issuing a “garbage” ruling in a social media post Wednesday. And Trump pollster Jim McLaughlintold Politicothat the case was decided by “a bunch of unelected, left-wing judges.” Missouri Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe similarly said “unelected liberal judges” shouldn’t determine who can be president.”
It’s been a rallying cry from Republicans that the Colorado Supreme Court Justices who ruled that Donald Trump is not eligible to be on the primary ballot for the Republican Presidential nomination were not elected by voters. Although the Justices were nominated by the Governor, after an initial two-year term, each Justice then needs to be elected by the citizens of Colorado. As far as this specific set of Justices, 6 of the 7 have already been voted in by the statewide electorate. Including all 4 who found Trump was ineligible. The only Justice who hasn’t faced a retention election was one of the 3 who ruled for Trump, during the 4-3 decision against the insurrectionist.
Justice Maria Berkenkotter was appointed in 2021 and will be up for election next year. Joining Berkenkotter in the dissenting opinion that Trump should remain on the ballot were; Chief Justice Brian Boatright and Justice Carlos Samour. Chief Justice Boatright received 69% of the votes during his retention election, while Justice Samour received 73% in 2020.
The Justices in the majority position, agreed that Trump should be disqualified due to the language in the Constitution, specifically the 14th Amendment section 3. They were Justice Melissa Hart, (who is not the actress who played “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”) she received 75% of Coloradan’s votes. Along with Justices: Richard Gabriel, William Hood, and Monica Marquez who received 74%, 71%, and 68% of voter’s support respectively.
As we are all well aware by this point, Republicans don’t let the truth get in the way of their whiny whataboutism. Instead, they spread lies and misinformation to their rabid delusional base. Even knowing the ramifications of their disinformation could result in, at the very least, death threats. It’s only a matter of if, not when before one of these deranged Right-Wingers takes off their tinfoil-lined MAGA hat and physically attacks an undeserving American just doing their job.
Of course, the Republican response to such an assault on unsuspecting Government Officials would be met with cries of a mental health crisis with no acceptance of accountability. What these MAGATs don’t get is, that giving their mentally unstable followers a target and a motive means you are not only complicit, you are the main reason some innocent person was harmed or worse, killed.
But that is the mentality of today’s Republican Party and its leaders. If things don’t go their way they; lie, cheat, and steal because they themselves, don’t have the mental fortitude to overcome a challenge to their hold on power. What makes it even more cowardly is that they sick their sycophants on their political challengers, because they have no legal recourse, to insulate them from their corrupted behavior.
