(CNN) — “Ohio’s Republican governor has vetoed legislation that would have barred transgender youth from receiving gender-affirming care, he said Friday.
Signing the bill would “be saying that the state, the government” knows what’s better for youth than their parents, Gov. Mike DeWine said.
The legislation would have prohibited gender-affirming care for trans and nonbinary youth, including hormone blockers, hormone replacement therapy, medical or surgical procedures and some mental health services. The bill also sought to prohibit transgender athletes from taking part in female sports.
“Parents have looked me in the eye and told me but for this treatment, their child would be dead,” DeWine said at a news conference.
People who have transitioned told him “they are thriving today because of that transition,” he said. For transgender minors and their families in Ohio, “the consequences of this bill could not be more profound,” he said. “Ultimately, I believe this is about protecting human life.”
Decisions about gender-confirming care should be made by the minor, parents and medical professionals, he said.”
Pardon my confusion, it’s not often that here on www.the-anti-social-media.com do we have a chance to highlight a well-thought-out and compassionate decision made by a Republican. So I thought we should give a shoutout to Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine. His efforts, to veto a hate-fueled bill, that would take medical treatment decisions away from the families and doctors who know the right path for their children. Forcing them to abide by an archaic law made by politicians with no personal or medical knowledge, was refreshingly empathetic.
Qualities that have been prolifically absent from the modern-day Republican Party. So when someone displays the humanity that such an issue deserves, and the courage to go against the Right-Wing ideology, we should celebrate them for doing what is right. The GOP has normalized barbaric rhetoric regarding the Transgender community. Dehumanizing children who just want to live a healthy happy lifestyle that feels comfortable for them. It’s a clear example of how Republican officials are infringing upon the rights of their citizens. Just as they have done with the comparable abortion issue.
The same Republicans who pride themselves on removing big government from personal decisions. Have the hypocrisy of furthering an intrusive social agenda that defines government overreach. Luckily for the Transgender youth of Ohio, their Governor took into consideration the destructive impact that this ban would have caused. On kids who have enough struggles to contend with. Maybe Gov. Mike DeWine’s comments, explaining his veto, will persuade other GOPers. To gain awareness of the real-world consequences that banning forms of healthcare, can have on those in need. However, I won’t hold my breath waiting for Conservatives to follow his lead because as we’ve learned, the Republican Party, as a whole, doesn’t care what happens to the health and well-being of those people who have differing opinions.
