(Black Iowa News)—One of the nation’s oldest presidential forums based in Iowa is turning its attention to polling Brown and Black voters after Republicans chose not to participate in the forum for Republican candidates, leading to its cancellation.
Wayne Ford, co-founder of the Brown & Black Forums of America, said all presidential candidates, Democrats and Republicans, who attend the Iowa caucuses have been invited to participate in the organization’s debate/forum since the organization was founded in 1984, but Republicans have never participated. Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama and a long list of Democrats have participated in the forum since its inception.
“I do wish the GOP would’ve attended to make a statement about how their agenda will impact people of color . . . perhaps their refusal to attend did make a statement,” wrote Diyonda Avant, a small business owner, on Black Iowa News’ Facebook page.
Imagine that!! In the history of the Brown & Black Forums of America in Iowa, ZERO Republican Candidates for President have honored their invitation. In 2016 the Candidates accepted their invite but cancelled at the last minute. Boy does that speak volumes about what the GOP genuinely feels about Minority Communities, including their thoughts and concerns. Now they don’t even bother to show up, when pretending to care, is one of the only things the modern-day Republican Party has accomplished.
This makes the opinion polling suggesting that Black and Hispanic voters are shifting to the Right very disheartening. Unless you’re extremely wealthy, electing Republican candidates is a vote against your best interests. The only substantial legislation the GOP has passed in decades is tax cuts for the rich and corporations. None of their policy proposals would have beneficial effects on the middle and lower classes no matter what the color of your skin is. Besides the tax cuts to the uber-wealthy removing the rights of Women, Minorities, and LGTBQ+ Americans. Is the only other priority they have put the weight of their legislative majorities behind. Why any person would support a Party that values denying others freedoms is beyond my comprehension.
Whether it’s a messaging problem or Social Media propaganda distorting the reality of the situation I’m not sure. However, the disparity between what Republicans are doing for middle and lower-class citizens versus the Democrats has only further extended over time. To the point where the right wing doesn’t attempt to cover up their attacks on human rights and the erosion of our democracy. That has been bestowed upon us all via the Constitution.
This specific story, may not get the attention it deserves, but it underscores the systemic racism that exists within the growing MAGA Republican movement. I just hope that more people will speak out publicly against today’s GOP and their political agenda. Otherwise, they will only continue to disenfranchise more American citizens if they attain the political majorities they seek. Just listen to Donald Trump’s own words and you’ll understand how he truly views us all. We are mere obstacles for the wannabe Dictator that can only come between him and the absolute power he craves. So let’s all vote blue, till Republicans like Trump have no choice but to recognize, that being elected means you’re working for all the people not just those who think, look like, and voted for you!!
