(AP) — “The U.S. Homeland Security Department said Saturday that Texas denied federal agents access to a stretch of border when they were trying to rescue three migrants who drowned.
The federal government’s account came hours after U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar said the Texas Military Department and Texas National Guard “did not grant access to Border Patrol agents to save the migrants” Friday night. Mexican authorities recovered the bodies of a woman and two children Saturday across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
“This is a tragedy, and the State bears responsibility,” said Cuellar, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee for homeland security, in a statement.”
Texas Governor Greg “Dr. Evil” Abbott this week insisted that if it wasn’t for the Biden Administration charging him with murder he would have immigrants crossing the border into Texas shot. Apparently, we should take the man at his word because yesterday his Texas National Guard Unit under his direction wouldn’t allow Federal Border Patrol Agents to save a Mother and two children from drowning.
If you were to assume a man who is wheelchair-bound, like Abbott is, would understand hardships and have the slightest amount of empathy for others. In the Governor’s case, you would be severely mistaken. As for the State Run National Guard members who stood by while watching a woman and children succumbing to the Rio Grand. They set up a blockade that prevented Federal Border Patrol Officers from entering the area where rescue of the doomed migrants was possible. These are men and women who swore an oath to protect and defend the public. Whether or not these people were immigrants or Texas residents, they were human beings and deserved at least a minimal amount of assistance. Not the inhumane death sentence that simply intervening would have commuted.
Allowing them to drown goes against the basic principles of humanity, and for what, to follow orders given by a madman. It’s absolutely horrific and deeply disturbing that United States Soldiers under Texas supervision. Could stand by and watch that happen on American soil. If that doesn’t tell you all you need to know about the hatred Governor Abbott and Republicans have towards immigrants, then maybe the implementation of shooting them might do the trick.
Don’t get me wrong, the situation at the border needs much improvement. But that has more to do with inaction from Congress over the past 20+ years. Both Democrats and Republicans are complicit in ignoring updating immigration laws. However, Republicans pretend they have no responsibility for the problem and blame the whole outdated system on Democrats. When they ignored the larger issue during the Trump Administration and used archaic patchwork solutions that only worsened the chaos. The Trump-era decision to close asylum application centers throughout Central and South America also created these caravans of mass migration.
Yet Trump and the Republicans, act as if they were never in power. Passing the buck on to the Biden Administration. Both the work that needs to happen through bipartisan legislation. Along with the blame that somehow has fallen squarely on the backs of Democrats. Once again Democrats are tasked with cleaning up the mess left behind by Republicans. Immigration, the economy, job creation, and crime reduction are all things Republicans campaign on. When it’s the Democrats who have been far more successful throughout the last 100 years, and more so in the last 30, at these issues.
If Congress can pass bipartisan legislation to address the immigration crisis under President Biden’s leadership. I’ll be curious to see how Republicans will respond. I’m sure they’ll find some issue to fabricate some straw man argument. Maybe Governor Abbott will decide he wants to shoot Liberals who enter Texas. After the disgusting display of “Texas Justice,” he dolled out to a drowning Woman and two Children. I wouldn’t put anything past the Right Wing Governor Abbott. A man so void of compassion is clearly deranged.
