(CBS News)– “Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez went from quietly tending bar to loudly challenging the establishment in Congress, and on the national political stage. She’s known as “AOC” to most of America, and is not afraid to ignore the party line.
The biggest issue right now is immigration.
“I think it’s not just about President Biden. It’s also about Congress… our government and our governance,” Ocasio Cortez told CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer. “The first thing we need to do, I think, is actually be able to provide the resources so that our system, as it’s currently designed, can function. Right now, because of a Republican-controlled house and so much of what has been going on, some of these basic systems are not even being processed. We don’t have our judges to process the visa applications. We don’t have our actual paperwork processing so people that people can get work permits, do the things they need to do to get on their feet and not have to rely on our system.”
Ocasio Cortez said the most important issue, however, is to “provide a true path to citizenship in this country, and return to a time, because we weren’t always like this, return to a time where path to citizenship is accessible, so that people can actually work quickly, get on their feet, find a job and support their families.””
AOC is busy doing in this clip, what AOC does best. Speaking common sense to her Republican colleagues across the aisle. However, her touching argument most likely fell on deaf ears. Considering common sense is more like a foreign language to Right Wingers. Seeing as the list of Republicans who speak it fluently, can’t be more than a half dozen.
Maybe it’s time we changed the phrase to uncommon sense when referencing the term in the description of the GOP. Being that it’s just as rare to find that quality in Republican Party members. As is, the moral high ground on social issues, such as immigration, in comparison to the Democrats.
As for Ocasio-Cortez’s argument, just as most nations have found, populations are on a sharp decline worldwide. So much so, that countries in Asia are in panic mode because soon they won’t be able to sustain their current military enlistment numbers. That is what truly makes America great, we constantly have a steady supply of potential citizens willing to be part of The United States. In places like China, Russia, and Iran, unless you’re born there you will never be considered a person of that nationality. Here in the USA, you can be an immigrant from any other country, but once you’ve earned citizenship you and your future ancestors are considered Americans.
That’s what binds us together, besides Natives, we are all the descendants of immigrants. Just because your family’s migration, may have taken place long before others, doesn’t change the fact that it happened. That is what is so infuriating about the Right Wing agenda and discriminatory rhetoric surrounding immigration. They act as if they have some moral superiority over present-day immigrants when their relatives from previous generations were in the exact situation.
Another political policy where the divide is noticeable, separating Democrats and Republicans on the fundamentals of American immigration. Democrats celebrate the diversity of the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free” in the United States. Creating policies that protect the freedoms of all. While Republicans are trying to strip away the rights of those who don’t look, think, and act exactly like they do. Until Republicans comprehend that we need more people to fill the vacancies of future jobs without forced child labor as the answer. Which means generating more demand and revenue needed to grow our economy. Keeping today’s immigrants from fulfilling their American dreams. Is a surefire way to create an American nightmarish scenario in which we are no longer able to grow as a nation in manufacturing, economically, militarily, and lastly social diversity.
