(The Huff Post)–”United Auto Workers Union President Shawn Fain had some tough words for former President Donald Trump on Wednesday. “Donald Trump is a scab!” the labor leader yelled in a speech to members in Washington, thumping his finger on the podium for emphasis.
The insult was one of many Fain tossed at Trump as he announced the union’s endorsement of President Joe Biden for reelection. Fain cast Biden as a steadfast ally to unions and the working-class — and Trump as the opposite. He said the former president was a friend to the “billionaire class” and sought to undermine workers at the benefit of the rich. “Donald Trump is a billionaire and that’s who he represents,” Fain said. “If Donald Trump ever worked in an auto plant, he wouldn’t be a UAW member ― he’d be a company man trying to squeeze the American worker.”
He pointed out that Biden publicly stood with the UAW members during their recent strike against Ford, General Motors and Jeep parent company Stellantis, when he visited a Michigan picket line in September. Trump, on the other hand, had the opportunity to publicly support striking GM workers when he was president in 2019, but he declined to do so, Fain said. “He said nothing, he did nothing – not a damn thing, because he doesn’t care about the American worker,” Fain said.”
Shawn Fain the immensely popular UAW (United Auto Workers) Leader recently announced his endorsement of President Biden in the 2024 Presidential Election. A move that should come as no surprise to anyone with an ounce of political sanity left. But as we are all overly aware, in this day and age, of political disinformation and right-wing propagandist rhetoric. Sanity in the political world is rapidly declining in favor of delusion.
That’s why a no-nonsense working man’s voice like Fain is exactly the type of spokesperson the Biden campaign needs to promote. Fain’s ability to reach a portion of the Republican working class could easily have profound implications given his common sense arguments are so relatable. A major problem Democrats have is their messaging. For a party that does so much for the working-class population, there’s a false narrative that Republicans are the party that cares more about everyday Americans. A baseless claim that sadly has become the popular opinion in rural communities.
Fain simply corrects the record with his real-world comparisons between Biden and Trump. Fain employs the tried and true tactic of leaders everywhere. The K.I.S.S. method, Keep It Simple Stupid! Just show them the facts that they can look at and see how much it affects their own lives. Strip away all the bogus rhetoric and they can see for themselves what’s left, the truth.
It’s truly appalling hearing so many people from the lower and middle classes support Donald Trump and the current GOP. When Republican politicians, especially Trump, never show their support for those same working-class people who voted them into office. As Fain points out, it’s only the ultra-wealthy and greedy corporations who benefit from Republican policies. Maybe Fain is just the perfect person to penetrate that conservative echo chamber. To reach those voters who have ditched the Democrats in favor of the GOP.
At one point in the late 40’s early 50’s Union workers were 60% more likely to vote Democratic, that figure in 2020 was closer to 20%. There is no reason why with a passionate Union debater like Fain backing the Biden Administration. That the numbers from yesteryear can’t happen again in 2024. Donald Trump has done nothing since being elected president for the working class. While every decision made by Biden in his first term has been to build the country from the bottom up.
The Chips Act, Infastruction Bill, Rising Wages, Robust Economy, Common Sense Gun Reform, Veteran’s Care, Lowering Drug Prices, Student Loan Forgiveness, and an Explosion in American Manufacturing to name a few accomplishments. With results like that being spoken about by Union leaders like Fain, it’s only a matter of time before the narrative fog starts to fade away. Leaving behind a clear choice for the workers of America. President Joe Biden, if he’s already set the record for the most jobs created during a Presidential term. Imagine just how much more he will deliver if given the opportunity to finish the job he started.
