(Yahoo News)–“Conservative radio host Jesse Kelly stepped forward to boast that he is who Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) said had threatened to “destroy” him over his push for the now-nixed bipartisan bill on immigration.
In a Senate floor speech on Wednesday, Lankford said an unnamed “popular commentator” had “told me flat out, ‘If you try to move a bill that solves the border crisis during this presidential year, I will do whatever I can to destroy you because I do not want you to solve this before the presidential election.’”
The lawmaker added, “By the way, they have been faithful to their promise and have done everything they can to destroy me in the past several weeks.” The bill came under relentless fire from former President Donald Trump and his allies, who see immigration as key to his reelection in November.
Kelly later Wednesday claimed credit for threatening Lankford on X, formerly Twitter. Kelly was once a frequent guest on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show before Carlson’s April 2023 ouster from the conservative network.
“America needs a dictator” and “the right is going to pick a fascist within 10 to 20 years” to lead the country are among Kelly’s previous controversial comments.”
It’s long past the time that we stop referring to MAGA Republicans as the ultra-conservative. There is nothing about this group of wannabe bullies and Trump backscratchers that represents the values of the conservative Republican. Senator James Lankford on the other hand is as conservative as a politician can be. Yet his border bill was dead on arrival not because it was some left-leaning legislation. By all accounts, it was the most comprehensive conservative immigration reform package written in most of our lifetimes. However, it was against Donald Trump’s wishes to solve the border crisis and that was the lone reason why Republicans refused to support the bipartisan resolution.
In today’s Republican Party loyalty to Trump, not conservatism is what makes you an upstanding member of the GOP. Senator Lankford thought he was negotiating in good faith on behalf of the Republican Party. He managed to persuade Democrats to accept a long list of conservative immigration policies. Which was the ransom the right wing demanded. As they held other pressing national security concerns hostage until Democrats agreed to border security. What was Lankford’s reward for accomplishing exactly what was asked of him by his GOP colleagues? Getting abandoned by his own party on the once mandatory requirement. Then threatened by those MAGAT propagandists who never even took the time to read the bill.
As I’ve mentioned more times than I can count, Republicans don’t stand for anything anymore. The one political issue that they have campaigned on for the last decade-plus is immigration reform and border security. Now that they can solve the growing problem, it’s like they are the dog who caught the car. What will they have left, to bitch and moan about during election season? Trump being a traitorous criminal and future dictator doesn’t make for a good campaign commercial. The general public might finally realize that Trump has nothing constructive to offer the American electorate.
Since Trump and his sycophants in right-wing media can only brainwash a certain percentage of the U.S. population. Any individual Republican who calls Trump out for his lies, hypocrisy, and anti-democratic ideology. Finds themselves as enemies to the political party they have spent a lifetime fighting for. Senator Lankford may be the latest but he’s not the first and surely not the last. Just ask Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, and Adam Kinszinger They’ve all been loyal to the conservative values that once stood for something in the Republican establishment. Only to have their political careers destroyed for simply speaking out against Trump. Until conservatives nationwide understand that the GOP has ditched their political agenda in favor of one very flawed man. They’ll continue to have their issues ignored just so the party can put all their eggs in Trump’s basket. Allegiance to the most prolific loser in the history of this country is now the only reason to vote Republican.
