(CNN) — “Former President Donald Trump on Saturday said he would encourage Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to any NATO member country that doesn’t meet spending guidelines on defense in a stunning admission he would not abide by the collective-defense clause at the heart of the alliance if reelected.
“NATO was busted until I came along,” Trump said at a rally in Conway, South Carolina. “I said, ‘Everybody’s gonna pay.’ They said, ‘Well, if we don’t pay, are you still going to protect us?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ They couldn’t believe the answer.” Trump said “one of the presidents of a big country” at one point asked him whether the US would still defend the country if they were invaded by Russia even if they “don’t pay.” “No, I would not protect you,” Trump recalled telling that president. “In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You got to pay. You got to pay your bills.”
The White House later Saturday called Trump’s remarks “appalling and unhinged” and touted President Joe Biden’s efforts to bolster the alliance.
“President Biden has restored our alliances and made us stronger in the world because he knows every commander in chief’s first responsibility is to keep the American people safe and hold true to the values that unite us. … Encouraging invasions of our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling and unhinged – and it endangers American national security, global stability, and our economy at home,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement.”
Mob boss I mean, leading Republican Candidate for President Donald Trump publicly admitted last night, to what I’ve been warning anyone who will listen to me, that not only would he remove the United States from the NATO alliance. If one of our allies were to be invaded by Russia unless they paid the U.S. for protection. Trump says he would welcome the Russian military invasion regardless if it was a trusted ally or not.
Not only should that opinion be condemned by every red-blooded American, but his language conjures up the type of logic that only the mafia would use. However, this isn’t some “made guy” shaking down local businessmen for protection money. This is a man vying for the job of leader of the free world. Which if Trump is elected into office, it appears the term “free world” will no longer be relevant. Not with Trump’s cash, gas, or ass system of worldwide political reciprocation.
The audacity of this guy, who has consistently welched on paying his bills, taxes, legal fees, and a whole litany of other debts is astounding. Trump is currently using the donations of hardworking American taxpayers to finance the defense of his crime spree. So making threats against foreign countries who don’t pay the Trump vig. When the United States has willingly committed to its military protection via a longstanding NATO treaty. Is hypocritical at best and poses a real threat to future global stability.
The days of Trump dog whistles to his collusion with Vladimir Putin are long gone. He’s now quite comfortable saying what used to be the quiet part out loud. If no one, especially his delusional supporters, is going to hold him accountable. He will have no problem further destroying confidence in American morality, through the eyes of foreign governments around the world. Trump has made it abundantly clear whose side he is on, between Sovereign Democracies and Authoritarian Dictatorships. Trump’s fan-girl envy is on full display every single time he mentions any of the world’s most heinous and corrupt regimes. He constantly disrespects our democratic partners and even displays contempt for the United States military.
Let’s not forget how Trump took the word of Vladimir Putin over his own generals and intelligence agencies when Russia was paying bounties for killing American soldiers in Afghanistan. I often claim that Trump only cares about himself no matter what the circumstances. Yet it seems the more he’s allowed to ramble at his MAGA rallies. Trump does show some semblance of loyalty, however twisted it may be. Of course, it’s Vladimir Putin and Russia who are the beneficiaries of his admiration and willful ignorance. At what point does his base realize he’s far more concerned with producing results for the Russian leader than he’ll ever be for his own fellow countrymen and women? I know I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that possibility to occur for the legions of MAGATS willfully blinded to the truth.
