(Newsweek)—Republican Congressman Ken Buck said that House members “were warned” that allegations leveled by an ex-FBI informant regarding President Joe Biden‘s business dealings may not be credible.
Alexander Smirnov, whose statements about the Biden family’s alleged dealings in Ukraine drove the Republican-led push for an impeachment inquiry against the president, was charged last week, accused of lying to the FBI and manufacturing fraudulent records. According to the indictment, Smirnov fabricated claims that Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, each sought $5 million bribes from Ukrainian energy company Burisma in exchange for favors while Biden served as vice president.
The charges against Smirnov have sparked new criticism against House Republicans, who have led an inquiry into the Biden family for months but have yet to connect the president to accusations surrounding Hunter Biden.
Speaking to CNN‘s Kaitlan Collins Wednesday evening, Buck pushed back on impeachment efforts by his Republican colleagues in light of the charges against Smirnov, claiming that lawmakers “were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness’ testimony … that the credibility of this statement was not known.””

Although the Republican spin on Russian Intelligence Officials feeding disinformation through their key “source” of Biden impeachment propaganda, has been to blame the FBI. While that flimsy excuse doesn’t stand up to the slightest scrutiny. Especially since one of their own, Republican Ken Buck has admitted that the GOP was initially warned the credibility of informant Alexander Smirnov was not reliable.
Yet House Republicans still decided to build their entire Impeachment Investigation on the words of a Putin errand boy who was tasked with feeding them baseless lies about the sitting President. When they had prior knowledge that he shouldn’t be trusted. Not one Republican thought they should fact-check this individual before spreading his false accusations, invented by Russia, to the entire American population.

This is the price you pay when you’ve concocted a political narrative and THEN you try to prove it. That is not how investigations are supposed to be conducted. Evidence of criminal wrongdoing being committed is usually the place where you start your case not end it. Republicans have done such an incredible job of convincing themselves that Biden is corrupt. They will believe anything that supports their claims. Even if the people corroborating their narrative are untrustworthy at best and Russian plants at worst.
Alarmingly for Republicans, this isn’t the first time they’ve been duped by a foreign operative posing as an impeachment witness. They also were conned by Gal Luft an Israeli-American citizen who was charged for being a Chinese Spy. So now two of the Republicans’ main sources of information related to the Biden inquiry have been working on behalf of the United States’ biggest adversaries.
The GOP may have been ignorant of their role as foreign propagandists. However, now fully informed of their complicit bias against the President. Instead of taking the blame and apologizing to the Biden family and the American public, they’d much rather make excuses. Denying their culpability and trying to make the FBI look like a scapegoat. But thanks to Ken Buck and his candor, it appears that the “Buck” stops squarely at the feet of House Republicans. America and its President are patiently awaiting your apology.
