(Independent)–President Joe Biden made a surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday and was faced with questions about his age, Gaza, all the way to the Taylor Swift conspiracy theory.
Seth Meyers donned a suit and tie as he welcomed the president, who was also a guest on the first-ever episode of the show, along with Amy Poehler, who also came back and introduced Mr Biden.
Mr Biden may have appeared on the show, perhaps in a bid to appeal to younger voters, as this appearance not long comes after joining TikTok, an app predominantly associated with younger people, where his team has also been posting various internet trends and memes related to the president.
Meyers put forward a question to the 81-year-old president about his age, asking him how he can address many voter concerns over his seniority. “Take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am,” said Mr Biden, who is less than four years older than 77-year-old Donald Trump. “It’s about how old your ideas are. Look, I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back,” Mr Biden continued. “He wants to take us back on Roe v Wade. He wants to take us back on a whole range of issues that are – 50, 60 years, they’ve been solid American positions.”
Now that’s the Joe Biden the American electorate fell in love with in 2020. I find it baffling how many people can have such negative opinions about President Biden. His legislative accomplishments in the two years Democrats held the majority in the House and Senate are second to none. His administration has passed more significant bills into law, in that short period, than any of his predecessors have.
However, it’s quite clear that the vast majority of the general population either doesn’t pay enough attention to actual results or cares more about appearances. If the latter is the case then last night’s one-on-one with Seth Meyers should be the blueprint going forward for the Biden campaign. The President came off as sharp, witty, enthusiastic, and his greatest strength, empathetic.
Knowing that most, if not all, late-night hosts are firmly in Biden’s corner in a general election against Donald Trump. It would seem like an easy way for the Biden camp to shift this media narrative from his age back to his likability. If they take advantage of each late-night talk show looking to have the sitting President on. I can’t imagine any hosts who would willingly pass on such an easy ratings boost that a Presidential interview certainly creates. The knowledge of a friendly environment should put both Biden and his handlers at ease with more exposure.
This strategy could have multiple benefits including increased relatability among younger voters and improved understanding of his handling of the Gaza conflict. Both are currently weaknesses in his campaign mostly due to a lack of proper messaging. If more so-called “progressives” could get a chance to hear Biden’s unfiltered views on the crisis. They may learn there is a lot more common ground than they realize. He is the only leader in the world who is working to bring about future peace for both sides. If not for Biden’s insistence neither Israel’s government nor the leaders of the surrounding Arab nations involved would be at the negotiating table to begin with. These are complex realities that sadly the younger generations have not taken into account.
Addressing these topics straight from the President’s mouth to the American people can help untangle the mess caused by disinformation spread across social media platforms. With the unjustified false equivalency, mainstream media, adheres to, covering the political parties. The lies from Republicans end up getting just as much coverage as the truth does from the Democrats. Late-night television tells it like it truly is, without echoing fabricated rhetoric. Now that the country once again has these comedic voices to set the record straight. The Biden team should take full advantage of the powerful reach late-night shows have. Landing straight into the social media feeds of millions of potential voters. It’s a clear win-win scenario for everyone involved and a move that could potentially save our democracy.
