Republican Verbally Attacks Rape Victim As She Accuses Host Of Victim Shaming!!!

(The New Republic)-“Representative Nancy Mace, an outspoken sexual assault survivor, had a baffling response when asked why she continues to support rapist Donald Trump for president.

Mace, who endorsed Trump in January, appeared Sunday on ABC’s This Week. When host George Stephanopolous asked Mace how she can “square” her support for Trump with his being found liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll and then defaming her, Mace immediately began repeatedly accusing Stephanopoulos of trying to “shame” her for being sexually assaulted.

When Stephanopolous reiterated that a jury had found Trump liable for rape, a decision upheld by the presiding judge and then reinforced by a second jury, Mace snapped, “It was not a criminal court, number one.”

The irony was lost on Mace, but not Carroll. The popular author tweeted Sunday afternoon:

Obviously, survivors of sexual assault should never be shamed for the attack. But Mace’s mental gymnastics here are just the latest demonstration of the congresswoman’s stunning hypocrisy.

According to Mace, it only counts as rape if the attacker is found guilty in a criminal court, not a civil court as Trump was. By this logic, sexual assault isn’t such a big deal, because out of every 1,000 instances of rape, only 13 get referred to a prosecutor. Only seven actually result in a felony conviction.”

As someone who has loved ones who are rape survivors, this has always been a subject matter that is very near and dear to my heart. I have profound empathy for the horrific trauma that Republican Nancy Mace and millions of women around the world have suffered through the nightmare of sexual assault. As any person with a shred of decency should feel.

Never judge someone who has lived through such atrocities nor question their methods of finding peace within themselves. But as much as Mace deserves the same respect surrounding her own horrific situation. It shouldn’t give her license to use her past as a weapon to undermine sexual violence other women have faced. While It’s her right to support Trump’s candidacy, however flawed her argument may be. For Mace to victim shame, E. Jean Carroll’s traumatic event only to give cover for her political support of a sexual predator is disturbingly contradictory.

Lessening another person’s account of sexual abuse, while simultaneously falsely accusing George Stephanopolous of that exact behavior is the epitome of hypocrisy. Relying upon deceptive deflection as a way to discredit a reasonable question is morally questionable. Especially when Mace’s tactic was used in promoting the same type of monster as her attacker, a man with a long history of victimizing other women.

If your political ideology is so important, you would purposefully ignore the glaring hypocritical holes in your reasoning. Just to satisfy the rabid MAGA base and its criminally corrupted leader Trump. Maybe you should look at yourself in the mirror and decide what is most important to you in this life. Kowtowing to the demands of a sexual deviant, in the hopes of furthering your political ambitions. Mace has chosen politics over her values, sadly coming at the expense of sexual assault survivors much like herself.

Just because Mace has every right to make such disheartening decisions doesn’t mean people having concerns can’t question her motives. That certainly isn’t victim-shaming on Stephanopolous’s behalf. If anything Mace was the person in that interview to cross that unthinkable boundary by absolving the actions of Trump. A documented sexual abuser exonerated by her counter-accusations against those he victimized. Mace’s statements do far more to silence women seeking to have their voices heard than it does to amplify them. Whether she’s willing to admit it to herself or not. Mace not Stephanopolous, was the shameful critic of Carroll’s battles with sexual violence. Not the proud defender of women’s issues Mace often pretends to be, solely for her selfish political gains.
