(Meidas Touch Network)–“Donald Trump called for the members of the House January 6th Select Committee, including former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, to be imprisoned in a post on Truth Social Sunday.
“She should go to jail along with the rest of the Unselect Committee!” Trump said in response to post about Liz Cheney allegedly withholding evidence from the final Committee report. Despite repeated accusations from Trump and his supporters that Jan 6 evidence was destroyed by the Committee, all evidence, exhibits, and video from the hearings can be found here.
Calls to arrest the members of the Jan 6 Committee have been widely circulating on X and other social media sites for years. Trump’s amplification of this language represents a dangerous escalation in violent authoritarian rhetoric ahead of the 2024 election.
During a speech in Dayton, Ohio Saturday, Trump called the Jan 6 insurrectionists “unbelievable patriots” and “hostages”; language that was first used by right-wing media and echoed by MAGA members of Congress like Elise Stefanik. This language removes the criminality of the actions of the insurrectionists and endows them with political prisoner status, removing the legitimacy of the United States government.
Trump is openly embracing authoritarian rhetoric. He is amplifying calls to imprison his political opponents who haven’t committed any crime, and release actual criminals from prison merely for being loyal to him.”
Republicans and Right Wing Media have been twisting themselves into a partisan pretzel over Trump’s warning of a “bloodbath” if Biden were to win the election. Claiming the media has unfairly targeted Trump and took his comments out of context. What they don’t get, is that this isn’t the first instance where Trump has promised violence and retaliation against those who oppose him. It’s a continuation of a consistent narrative that has the whole World fearful of a second Trump term.
Case in point, his latest rhetoric suggests he plans to imprison elected officials tasked with overseeing the investigation into his January 6th insurrection. Could Republicans possibly call that a misrepresentation of Trump’s statements? The GOP wants to have it both ways. They take his hateful comments in stride when he’s obviously unhinged. Ignoring the effects his words have on his rabid MAGA base. They pick and choose which comments of Trump’s should be taken seriously. Enabling him to say whatever he pleases without fear of the political repercussions his threats deserve. Trump apologists have allowed this behavior to escalate to a fever pitch. With no clear explanation for how they plan to reel him in if elected.
If the GOP has delusions of Trump lessening the political tensions if given the power he craves. Then Republicans are flat-out lying to themselves and the American public. Trump’s words and actions imply he intends to do whatever he wants, despite what Republicans think. He has single-handedly destroyed the Republican Party’s agenda with little to no pushback from conservatives. They’ve lied on Trump’s behalf for so long, that they are blinded to the reality that he doesn’t share their political values. Trump is more laser-focused on his own dystopian vision for the country. He doesn’t waste time furthering party policies important to the GOP. Republicans may be along for the ride, but they are just the vehicle Trump uses to reach his own self-serving goals.
Just like the growing list of his former colleagues now being used as cannon fodder against his legal troubles. Trump has left a trail of Republicans in his wake. Nearly all of his past administration has either resigned or spoken out against Trump. The remainder are currently facing prosecution for being complicit in his illegal conduct. A party full of suckers being easily conned into submission. If they believe that backing Trump now, will ultimately save them, from him turning on them. Just ask Liz Cheney who voted to support nearly 100% of his policies while in office. What she thinks of Donald Trump as he calls for her and her colleagues to be imprisoned, for simply doing their job. If the remaining GOP feels they are immune from Trump’s retribution then they are a lot dumber than I previously thought.
