(The Guardian)–“Jared Kushner has praised the “very valuable” potential of Gaza’s “waterfront property” and suggested Israel should remove civilians while it “cleans up” the strip. The former property dealer, married to Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, made the comments in an interview at Harvard University on 8 March.
Kushner was a senior foreign policy adviser under Trump’s presidency and was tasked with preparing a peace plan for the Middle East. Critics of the plan, which involved Israel striking normalisation deals with Gulf states, said it bypassed questions about the future for Palestinians. His remarks at Harvard gave a hint of the kind of Middle East policy that could be pursued in the event that Trump returns to the White House, including a search for a normalisation deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
“Gaza’s waterfront property could be very valuable … if people would focus on building up livelihoods,” Kushner told his interviewer, Harvard’s Middle East Initiative faculty chair, Prof Tarek Masoud “It’s a little bit of an unfortunate situation there, but from Israel’s perspective I would do my best to move the people out and then clean it up,” Kushner said.
Kushner also said he thinks Israel should move civilians from Gaza to the Negev desert in southern Israel. He said that if he were in charge of Israel his number one priority would be getting civilians out of the southern city of Rafah, and that “with diplomacy” it could be possible to get them into Egypt. “But in addition to that, I would just bulldoze something in the Negev, I would try to move people in there,” he said. “I think that’s a better option, so you can go in and finish the job.””

For all those progressives who believe that the Biden Administration doesn’t have the best interests of the Palestinian people in their proposed “two-state solution”. Vowing to withhold their votes for President Biden because they believe he hasn’t done enough to address the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza. Which in turn would benefit Donald Trump if they commit to a protest vote. Ultimately handing Trump the Presidency in November. Maybe it’s time for that portion of the Democratic Party to realize how the Trump Administration plans to handle Palestinian civilians still in Gaza.
Who better to listen to, when it comes to Donald Trump’s Middle East policy than his son-in-law and former Middle East Advisor, Jared Kushner. From the sounds of it, Kushner feels that the Palestinians should be completely removed from Gaza and relocated to the Israeli desert. Making way for the Israelis to capitalize upon the “valuable” “waterfront property” left behind by the displacement of Palestinians. This doesn’t sound like an approach that would satisfy progressives. So withholding their votes from Biden may be the worst possible scenario for the Palestinians they’ve been trying to protect all along.

Trump has publicly vowed to reinstate his “Muslim Ban” that he established during his first term as President. Yet protesting progressives’ shortsighted revolt against Biden would only empower Trump’s ability to invoke such Islamophobic decisions. Further deteriorating the future stability and well-being of Palestinians in Gaza and Arab Citizens around the World and at home in the US. It would be a costly mistake to undermine the Biden campaign when the alternative shows no empathy for the Palestinian people.
Biden has called for a funding increase for humanitarian aid and is currently constructing a new pier to provide much-needed supplies. While House Republicans’ proposal wouldn’t include any additional resources for the overwhelming crisis facing Palestinians. The GOP purposely refused to add additional funds for the civilians on the brink of starvation. The juxtaposition between the two parties’ ideas for peace in the region couldn’t be more drastically different.
However, it appears that progressives were so quick to vilify Biden’s response to this complex situation. That they overlooked how Trump and the Republicans’ devastating agenda would cripple any hope for a peaceful resolution for Palestinians. As President Biden has often stated, “Don’t compare me to the almighty, compare me to the alternative!” If progressives don’t embrace that logic, they will have enabled the exact horrifying outcome to Palestinians, they have so passionately been fighting to prevent.
