I recently watched the gripping documentary “Against All Enemies” a chilling account detailing the rise in white supremacy groups and their active recruitment of US military veterans. With their ultimate goal being to topple the American government under the guise of delusional patriotism.
The militia leaders follow the same structural principles as historically radicalized organizations such as the Klu Klux Klan and other prominent fascist groups. They prey upon veterans seeking similar camaraderie and meaningful purpose they lost after leaving active duty military service. Searching for a higher cause to fill the void left behind after years of combat missions. Fueled by racist propaganda cloaked in false pretenses. Including the belief, that their nation is under attack from Democrats and Minorities looking to strip away their freedoms.
The tactics used by these outfits are often effective and are being utilized by right-wing extremists looking to undermine democracy. While some members sincerely believe they are upholding their oath to defend and protect the Constitution. Others knowingly consume mass quantities of disinformation. Conspiracy theories and fabricated social divisions prevalent across social media platforms, feed into their warped political narrative.
Right-wing figures like Donald Trump and disgraced General Michael Flynn exploit these organized militias. As a tool used to install their political agenda if violence becomes necessary. The members are determined and continually prepared for any potential obstacles facing them. Since the laws against domestic terrorists are surprisingly ineffective compared to acts of foreign aggression. They operate in a legal loophole that requires immediate legislative action by Congress.
As with most online battles today, the only real weapon against homegrown enemies is exposure to the truth. Knowledge is the one remedy to escape the political echo chamber these former soldiers have been brainwashed into. Real tangible evidence separates fact from fiction. Watching “Against All Enemies” is the perfect place to start. If this documentary were a prerequisite to vote come November’s general election. It just might be the necessary medicine the United States needs to begin the healing process. Sometimes all it takes is a differing perspective to understand the flaws in your altered reality. The realization that you pose a threat you once swore to defend against. Maybe just the wake-up call these misguided veterans desperately need.
