(CEO)—House Democrat and political juggernaut Jasmine Crockett’s brilliant takedown of Republicans was once again on display. This time covering the ongoing topic of misuse of disinformation by the GOP. Which has had destructive effects on American democracy and divisive societal impacts. Crockett’s no-nonsense approach has vaulted the young Texas Democrat to rockstar status among the party’s base.
Congresswoman Crockett’s criticism of the right wing’s trafficking in lies on behalf of foreign governments to interfere in American politics was on point. This false narrative surrounding First Amendment protections has been intentionally distorted by Republicans. Government Officials spreading misinformation on social media platforms is not a legitimate form of free speech. Private companies like Meta or X can and should regulate content on their websites if the public interest can be harmed. It’s the government itself that cannot censor or restrict speech in most cases. Unless of course whatever is being said includes: incitement of lawlessness, making or distributing obscene material, fighting words, true threats, defamation, harassment, material and substantial disruption. So even if social media were run by the government and not private entities most of the language taking place on these platforms would not be legally protected under the First Amendment anyway.
Republicans have weaponize misinformation against their own country’s national security interests. The falsehoods about the Covid pandemic and the anti vaccine rhetoric ended up killing millions of Americans. The lies around fake election fraud claims undermines the integrity of our free and fair elections. Which is the foundation of American democracy. The use of Russian propaganda to cast doubt about the sitting President Joe Biden’s conduct in office. These are all examples of fraudulent narratives promoted by Republicans that have negatively impacted American national security.
We’ve all been witness to the increasing divide tearing this country apart from within. It’s not just a coincidence that the problem has become worse with the rise in social media usage. The disinformation campaigns co-opted by those on the right may be the biggest threat to American society as we know it. In the history of this great nation, no other foreign government has been able to destroy the United States.
Now it feels like we are doing to ourselves what other countries could never have done. It’s a divide-and-conquer technique that Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea have all tried and failed at. That was until the Republican Party decided it would self-inflict the same type of damage with the assistance of those foreign adversaries. It’s a difficult discussion that needs more attention. So thank you Jasmine Crockett for once again being the voice of reason in an era of right-wing political sabotage. No one exposes the Republican Hypocrisy clearly and concisely as she does. Hopefully, Crockett will be a Democratic force Republicans must answer to for the foreseeable future.
