(NBC News)–“Right-wing media that became purveyors of misinformation and amplified false claims as Donald Trump undermined the results of the 2020 election are finding themselves on the losing end of legal challenges — or facing new ones.
In just a few months, a handful of high-profile fringe media operations have been hit with courtroom losses.
“Right-wing media has finally faced the consequences of running disinformation campaigns,” said Yunkang Yang, an assistant professor of communication at Texas A&M University. “Some of them are finally being held accountable for the lies they spread.””
(CEO)—After yesterday’s horrifying column I felt like we needed some uplifting news today. To cleanse our political palate of the overwhelming amount of negativity. Lately, it’s been refreshing to see many far-right figures and organizations. Face legal repercussions for spreading manipulative lies to the public. It’s not often in this day and age for the truth to emerge victorious. So let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the most important recent wins for reality’s sake.
First and foremost we had Donald Trump being convicted by a jury of his peers. Since the media is a willing accomplice in Trump’s attacks against honesty. It’s a restorative feeling when the judicial process bases all of its decisions on actual facts and evidence. So although in most of these instances, the media lets these right-wing officials off the hook. The Judiciary ultimately makes them pay for their fabrications. In certain cases, it’s the media itself forced to pony up the money for intentionally misleading their viewers.
Fox News, OAN, NewsMax, and The Gateway Pundit have all lost huge settlements for their defamatory claims. Paying the victims in some cases hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. Some of the plaintiffs include voting machine manufacturers Smartmatic and Dominion. All due to knowingly telling election lies on behalf of Trump and his MAGA Republican allies.
Another satisfying court ruling was against Alex Jones. Jones is a far-right extremist and prominent conspiracy theorist. He was found liable for his false statements regarding the Sandy Hook massacre. The judgment against Jones was nearly $1.5 billion for his reckless conduct. His coordinated campaign of vicious verbal aggression on the dead school children’s surviving relatives. Is one of the most disturbing examples of the dangers his brand of bullying propaganda has on its intended victims. Not only were these families suffering the loss of their kids. They were subjected to constant false accusations and death threats from Jones and his listeners. So watching him finally get his comeuppance was a delightful experience. Witnessing Jones break down into tears on his program made me laugh a lot harder than I thought it would. The hypocrisy in Jones playing the victim card only seems lost on him.
Recently I covered the criminal indictment of the CEO (no relation) of “The Epoch Times”. For his part in laundering millions in stolen unemployment funds. The right-wing rag is the go-to ”news” source for all the latest MAGA Propaganda. Often quoted by Trump, Ted Cruz, and the rest of the disinformation pushers in the GOP. Then there’s the bull sh*t MAGA “documentary” “2000 Mules”. The film’s creator Dinesh D’Souza in May was pulled by his publisher and the film was removed from all streaming services. He was forced to apologize to a Georgia Man because of fake ballot stuffing allegations he is currently being sued for.
In each one of these circumstances, after years of eroding the trust in our democratic institutions. These individuals and corporations after a lengthy waiting period are now being punished for their crimes against American democracy. Proving once again that the destruction of anything can happen instantly. It’s building it back stronger which takes a long time. In the same way, Trump quickly collapsed the world’s economy during his lone term. Biden will need four more years to complete his economic recovery plan. After all the political divisions tearing apart American society from within. It’s rewarding to witness the parties most complicit proven to be at fault. It might only be the beginning of the societal repairs needed. But the build-back has to start somewhere so why not here and now?
