(CEO)—Just to be transparent I thought I should mention right off the top. I grew up on the same street as Teamster’s President Sean O’Brien. He lived four houses down on a tiny little street in our Boston suburban neighborhood. Sean was a bit older than me and was between the ages of my two lovely older sisters. Although for the most part, I did get along with him and his younger brothers. Rumors are still circulating to this day that it was the O’Brien boys who destroyed my fort behind the Budweiser plant. The one my friends and I had painstakingly built to conduct our shady preteen business in. So I can’t promise that I can be completely unbiased on this all too close-to-home topic, but as always I’ll try my very best.

This week Sean O’Brien went public with his controversial decision not to endorse any candidate for President in the upcoming 2024 Election. A surprising stance for the top Teamster to take considering all the support his Union received from the Biden Administration. Including a 36 Billion Dollar pension bailout from the Democrat. Something Donald Trump promised to do but refused to follow through on. Like the 99% of his other failed promises he made to Unions, to get elected back in 2016. Meanwhile, the Biden/Harris Administration has been repeatedly touted as the most Union-friendly Administration in Presidential history. That’s why a majority of the other major Unions in the country have thrown their support behind Harris’s campaign.

During his non-committal announcement to back neither Presidential candidate, O’Brien quoted internal polling results. He claimed the data showed Trump was favored by the rank-and-file members over Harris, 58%-31%. But immediately following his remarks a groundswell of support for Harris began to emerge, among local Teamster chapters. So much so that within 48 hours of the Teamster Boss’s politically hedging his bet. Over 1 million of the total 1.4+ million nationwide represented Teamsters were now endorsing Harris. Despite the national organization sitting this election out. That’s when questions started to arise about the confidence in Union’s leadership and the validity of the internal polling data.

One by one chapter leaders were stating their own inner polling showed Harris was the one favored over Trump by approximately 60%-40%. Calling into question the motivation and credibility of the Union President. After he was personally wooed by the Trump campaign on multiple occasions and chose to speak publicly at the Republican National Convention. When O’Brien had originally announced his involvement at the RNC. He also indicated he would like to take the stage at the Democratic National Convention. However, his invitation from the DNC never materialized. Yet the Democrats invited seven other Union leaders who spoke on day 1 of the convention. Is it possible this personal snub of O’Brien cost Harris the national endorsement of the Teamsters? Or perhaps during his private meetings with Trump were there possibly some quid pro quo discussions?

According to local Teamster chapters across social media platforms, regardless if that was O’Brien’s reasoning behind his decision. His position as Union President may be in jeopardy. After how much positive Harris has done for the working class. For O’Brien to create a false equivalency between her and Trump has been seen as negligent. Trump a well-known scab has routinely been against workers’ rights. An obvious reality that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the rank-and-file membership. So as of now, it appears O’Brien may be the one on the hot seat among the Teamsters, not Harris. For making such a contentious move with less than 3% of his total Union’s input considered. With confidence in O’Brien’s leadership at an all-time low among the membership and mid-level Union leadership. If any additional information comes to light that O’Brien’s personal feelings influenced his endorsement in any way. You can bet that the Teamsters will soon be having their very own Presidential Election. To choose a replacement for Sean O’Brien. Or as I consider it the much-deserved and long-overdue payback for my beloved fort!
