In a 57% to 43% margin the No votes prevailed in Ohio’s vote on issue 1. Issue 1 would have changed the referendum law that currently takes a simple majority to amend the State’s constitution. If passed it would’ve taken a supermajority of 60% to make amendments.
The State’s Republicans, to thwart upcoming ballot referendums enshrining abortion laws, created the measure.
In the 111 years since Ohio first granted voters the power to introduce citizen-led amendments, just 19 of 71 proposed measures have exceeded the 50% mark. Despite the GOP rhetoric claiming this issue was to protect the state from its own “radical” constituents.
Democratic voters flooded the polls in a once-purple state that has leaned red in recent elections. This is another loss for the GOP in a state controlled by Republican Lawmakers. In each instance that Abortion Rights laws have been put in the hands of the electorate, They have voted to keep a Woman’s right to choose. Even in states like Kansas, Kentucky, and Montana. Places that consistently vote Republican in most elections.
At what point will Republicans realize this is not just another policy that a majority of Americans disagree with? This issue is a major problem for the Right. It has fired up not only Democratic voters but has forced independents to the left on the issue. With Independents making up 49% of voting Americans. Republicans can’t afford to have them vote Democratic consistently.
As Republican agendas continue to pull the Party further right, where the extreme MAGA base rules, they alienate not only the Independents but even moderate Republicans too.
Now it’s up to Democrats to inform the voting public of their rival’s extreme views in the upcoming campaign season. Instead of drowning people in Liberal rhetoric, the Left must focus on simple messaging. We now see that it’s possible in States that bleed red, that Democratic policies and politicians can win.
With the strength of the American economy at record levels even as it soft lands to curb inflation. The border security under Biden’s leadership has alleviated the crisis predicted by the Right and their media alike. Once hotbed issues are now quelled by good policy decisions by the Biden administration. Democrats must capitalize on the momentum. Especially when Republican attacks on social causes continue to erode their potential base.
The Rights of Women, minorities, and LGTBQ are under attack. Those who plan to strip them away need to realize they are on the wrong side of History. Now it’s up to all voters to participate and save the soul of America once again. Today Ohio voters held the line for Lovers state-wide. Lovers of Rights, Choice, and Democracy.
