It’s Time For Democrats To Take Back Ownership Of The American Flag.

For far too long the American flag has been co-opted by the Right Wing and their supporters. They have taken a symbol of American patriotism and used it as a cover for their anti-American agenda. This devious practice is rampant in the MAGA wing of the Republican Party. It’s a calculated effort that is shameful and should be condemned. The time for Democrats to take back the symbol of our democracy is now.

Today’s MAGA cult seems to be built on a foundation of hate, bigotry, and ignorance. With Donald Trump as their totalitarian leader. Whom they often put above God and almost always choose over Country. While Trump at every opportunity, has put himself above the country and the constitution he swore to uphold. A true divider who has taken so much from the great people of this country. Putting his selfish interests and grip on power, over the laws and traditions that his predecessors held sacred.

Even Superman’s motto at one time was truth, justice and the American way. If the legendary superhero with unlimited powers could abide by such a moral code. You would think that a lifelong Conman could at least pretend to care about something more than himself.

At every Trump rally throughout the crowd, American flags are displayed. Always coupled with a plethora of different flags. In fact the American flag is routinely outnumbered by variations of Trump flags. Other notables that are commonplace at these gatherings are Confederate, Natzi, and Christian Nationalist flags. All modern-day symbols of bigotry and White Nationalism. When flown in conjunction with the American flag, it undermines the significance that our beacon of freedom represents. Not to mention these other flags are symbols of some of the greatest losers in history. Donald Trump, Natzis, and Confederates just to name a few. That when flown next to or even above our nation’s flag is not only disrespectful it’s in violation of our laws.

According to United States Code Title 4 entitled Flag and Seal, Seat of Government, and The States: “No persons shall display the flag of… any other national or international flag equal, above, or in a position of superior prominence or honor to, or in place of, the flag of the United States at any place within the United States or any Territory or possession thereof.”

So these MAGA cult members pretend to be patriotic to normalize their anti-American views. Their Trump over Party and Party over Country stance, is disgraceful and the ultimate betrayal. To those who have given their lives in the protection of our country and its flag. This same MAGA clan used the American Flag as an accomplice. When they stormed the Capitol to overthrow the government. That we the people elected as they performed their constitutional duties.

The Right has been infected by anti-government extremists. Once a small minority of the GOP, now have a stranglehold on the party and its leadership. So it’s now time that we must take back our nation’s flag. Just as Democrats have been tasked with protecting our democracy, from the MAGA Republicans and their authoritarian agenda. The Left has been forced to fight back, against the Conservative pursuit to rid fellow Americans of their rights. We must now also fight and protect our American Flag from becoming a symbol of oppression. At home and even abroad.

We the people, the democratic majority don’t have to commit to a Stars and Stripes wardrobe. Or purchase every piece of red, white, and blue memorabilia. Just to prove our dedication to this beautiful democratic experience. Our commitment to what John Winthrop referred to Boston, the symbol of the American experiment as “A City upon a Hill”. One that shines bright as a beacon of hope and freedom to the rest of the world.

That is what the Democratic Party stands for. Believing that all Men and Women are created equal and should be treated as such. It doesn’t get more patriotic than that. As Democrats, we should proudly display the one symbol that we have. That encompasses our values as people, our party, and our Country. We should fly it proudly at our homes and our gatherings. Because if we allow those who peddle hate and bigotry to appropriate the American Flag. It will lose the reverence that all the proud American men and women before us fought so bravely to protect. It’s our responsibility to protect and defend the American Flag from all the enemies of our democracy. Once thought to only be foreign are now predominantly domestic.
