(CNN)”Some of Kevin McCarthy’s allies are discussing nominating him for speaker, multiple sources tell CNN, which could complicate and prolong their process for electing a new speaker given McCarthy faces long odds of securing the gavel.
So far, McCarthy has refused to rule out a return to the speakership or thrown his support behind another candidate.
Some allies to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise see the maneuvering by McCarthy’s allies as designed to hobble Scalise’s bid for speaker, which has heightened tension between their camps.
McCarthy and Scalise have maintained a cordial working relationship over the years but have long been seen as potential rivals. Scalise considered challenging McCarthy for leader in 2018, and this year, McCarthy tapped his trusted allies Reps. Patrick McHenry and Garret Graves — not his top leadership deputies —to help him with his speaker’s bid in January, the debt ceiling crisis and the government funding deadline.”
Kevin McCarthy is at it again! I’ve never witnessed someone who is considered to be a “leader” in the Republican Party, to be so indecisive. McCarthy has more flip-flops than Hampton Beach does on the Fourth of July weekend. During his classless farewell speech to the media, he blamed Democrats for his failures as a “leader”. The one thing he was sure of that day was he would not run for the speakership again. That was just seven days ago!
Then four days later reports surfaced that he was planning on resigning from the House altogether, once Republicans were able to agree on a replacement Speaker of the House. The CNN report quoted multiple sources that said McCarthy had been telling colleagues about his desire to leave Congress as soon as Republicans could appoint his successor. Not even 30 minutes later he came forward to deny the report. To which the sources claimed McCarthy’s denial came because he was upset that the story had leaked. McCarthy wanted to be the one who would announce his resignation on his terms.
This would sound petty to most people, but this is the same “Leader” who twice let the country go down to the wire of a governmental shutdown. Only because he refused to work with Democrats to fix the self-created crisis till the very last minute.
Even after McCarthy chastised Donald Trump for orchestrating the attack on Congress on January 6th. Just a few weeks later he went down to Mar-A-Largo to lend his support for the insurrectionist and Chief. Giving Trump a political lifeline that resurrected his grip on Republican leadership.
After all of that, you would expect he would be too embarrassed to consider making another run at his old job. However, the nation has learned the hard lesson long ago that Kevin McCarthy has no shame in his game. Just a week after having his gavel ripped away from his clammy hands by his own Party who decided to vote him off the congressional island.
Yet here he is coordinating behind his number two’s back, Steve Scalise, like he is on the Republican version of Survivor. While Israel is fighting for its survival in the Middle East and Ukraine is rapidly running out of military supplies against Russia. Examples that highlight how chaotic the GOP and its “leadership” remain amid multiple wars that desperately need the support of the American government.
Kevin McCarthy is not only the “Karen” of the House of Representatives, but he is also the perfect example of how far the Republican Party has fallen in such a short period. Republicans, like McCarthy, have lost the confidence of a majority of the American public, and rightfully so. It makes you wonder how much more damage this country will have to endure before the Republican base realizes that they have put their Party in the hands of a man you couldn’t trust to play solitaire without cheating.
