Jill Stein announced yesterday that she will be once again running for President as a candidate for the Green Party. Stein who also ran in 2016 was an influential reason why Hillary Clinton lost the election to Donald Trump. Since then much has come to light regarding Stein’s connection to Russia and their involvement in interfering with the 2016 Presidential Election.
In fact, photographic evidence shows Stein attended a dinner in Moscow, and seated at her table was Russian Autocrat Vladimir Putin along with General Michael Flynn who at the time was working for the Trump campaign. According to an investigation from NBC News “Also at the table: Putin’s chief of staff, a former KGB general who had been sanctioned by the Obama administration for his role in 2014 annexation of Crimea and a deputy chief of staff who U.S. intelligence referred to as Putin’s head propagandist.”
Stein denies any involvement with any Russian interference but the evidence uncovered by a Senate investigation suggests that Russia was definitely involved in supporting the third-party candidate.
The NBC article states “Building support for Stein was one of a “roster of themes” the Moscow-sanctioned internet trolls “turned to repeatedly” in their effort to disrupt the election, according to a research team led by the New Knowledge cybersecurity firm. The researchers also found that the campaign to bolster Stein gained in intensity in the final days of the presidential campaign and largely targeted African-American voters.”
An organized disinformation campaign targeting minorities with Jill Stein as the candidate being promoted by Russian Hackers. Stein was not only being propped up on the internet, she was also a regular on Russian State Media’s television Russia Today (RT). To ensure that the groups targeted would refrain from voting for Clinton. Thus allowing Trump to win in closely contested swing states to achieve an electoral college victory.
“An NBC News review of the archives of RT and Sputnik, which the CIA has described as part of “Russia’s state-run propaganda machine,” from early 2015 to the 2016 election shows more than 100 stories, on-air and online, friendly to Stein and the Green Party.”
This relationship between Stein and the Russian State didn’t begin in 2015 before the Presidential Election. The Russian ties to Stein go back much further.“The Russian embrace of fringe voices like Stein goes back more than a decade to the earlier days of RT,” said Andrew Weiss, a Russian expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
As the 2016 election approached Stein, who had been very critical of Hillary Clinton, made public remarks suggesting that Trump would make a better President than Clinton. Implying that Clinton could push the U.S. to a nuclear war.
“On the issue of war and nuclear weapons,” Stein said, according to RT, “it is actually Hillary’s policies which are much scarier than Donald Trump who does not want to go to war with Russia.”
Analysis of Stein’s campaign initiatives also shows that the Green Party candidate has much in common with the Russian foreign platform. NBC News reports “There’s nothing in the reports to suggest that Stein was aware of the influence operation, but the Massachusetts physician has long been criticized for her support of international policies that mirror Russian foreign policy goals.”
Even Stein’s position on the escalating Ukraine conflict fell in line with Russia’s stance.“Weiss noted that the Stein campaign parroted the Russian position on Ukraine in 2016 and criticized the U.S. for installing a government in Kyiv “hostile to Russia.”
Russia wasn’t the only one who shared Stein’s Ukraine stance. Her opinion also coincided with the Trump campaign. As I covered in a previous article, before the 2016 Republican National Convention Trump along with then campaign manager Paul Manafort told the RNC that he would not support the Republican Party’s policy to arm Ukraine. Manafort, who had spent the previous decade working in Ukraine for a pro-Russian political organization called “The Party of Regions”. Started by Russian Oligarchs who pushed an anti-NATO agenda.
So Jill Stein can deny that she had any involvement with Russia’s attack on the security of the United States elections in 2016. However, what she can’t deny is that her campaign was used by the Putin-led Russian State Actors who not only meddled in our elections but could easily be the reason why Donald Trump was elected at all. With that knowledge, Stein still wants to enter the 2024 Presidential Race. That means Stein is either too ignorant to realize she poses a threat to our democracy. Or she is complicit in attempting to play spoiler again, for motives only she can answer. Either way, her candidacy should be considered a tool for Russia to get the outcome most favorable to Putin and Trump. Let’s just hope Democrats don’t fall for their election sabotage attempts in 2024.
