(NBC News)– “Former President Donald Trump likened North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson to Martin Luther King Jr. in an endorsement Saturday, despite the gubernatorial candidate’s long history of controversial comments about homosexuality, religion and victims of sexual abuse.
“This is Martin Luther King on steroids,” Trump said of Robinson at a pre-Super Tuesday rally in North Carolina. “I told that to Mark. I said, I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two,” he continued as he offered Robinson his endorsement in the Republican gubernatorial primary on Tuesday.
Robinson has been a vocal supporter of the former president and first endorsed Trump for re-election in June while speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference in Washington, D.C.
Robinson, a pastor, is a polarizing figure, catching harsh criticism for his past comments about women, Muslims, Jewish people and members of the LGBTQ community. The favorite to secure the North Carolina gubernatorial Republican nomination has, for example, insinuated that homosexuality is a stepping stone to pedophilia, harshly ridiculed school shooting survivors who promoted gun-control reform, encouraged forms of Holocaust denialism and used antisemitic tropes.”
Donald Trump’s relentless campaign to court black voters has taken another giant leap backward. This time Trump decided to refer to known antisemite and anti-LGBTQ+ bigot Lt. Governor Mark Robinson as “Martin Luther King Jr on steroids.” Adding that the Republican front-runner for North Carolina’s Gubernatorial race was even “better than MLK Jr”. Comparing nearly anyone to Dr. King is disrespectful, but knowing the background of Robinson makes this comparison even more disparaging.
Robinson has called women seeking abortions “murders” even if they’ve been impregnated by a rapist. The hypocrisy lies in that Robinson admitted he previously paid for his current wife to have an abortion procedure performed. During the couple’s own pregnancy years ago. If that lack of empathy doesn’t automatically disqualify someone from being considered a fraction of the man MLK JR was, don’t worry there’s plenty more.
Robinson has been known to often spew antisemitism, anti-Muslim, and anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech on the regular. From his track record the only reason he hasn’t said racist things about black Americans is only because he’s black himself. But then again that logic never stopped him from attacking couples in need of abortion care when he and his wife were part of that community. This man is so vile that even victims of mass school shootings have been targeted by Robinson’s unthinkable rhetoric.
So this is the quality of person, who Donald Trump, feels is “better than Martin Luther King Jr.” A total POS who mirrors the same disturbing attributes as Trump himself. I suspect the only reason Trump hasn’t made a comparison between himself and MLK Jr is solely because of the racial differences. So to circumvent that obstacle he has chosen a man just as morally bankrupt as himself but is black. Which is some slimy racist mental gymnastics Trump uses to make a false equivalence his followers can disseminate. Completely undermining the integrity, character, selflessness, and accomplishments that made Dr. Martin Luther King Jr such a historic icon and social justice defender. In a racist like Trump’s eyes, Dr. King was just another popular black man with a cause. Like his fond supporter and Republican cohort, Mark Robinson is. The only reason Trump thinks he’s superior to MLK Jr is because of their shared political interests. Mark Robinson should never be spoken in the same sentence as Dr. King. Unless of course, it’s to say “ Wow, Mark Robinson sure is a Trump-supporting fascist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr would be ashamed of his disgusting actions!”
